The Reformers

Lately, I've been thinking, trying to get some sort of an idea together.. then finally, I think I got one.

Jenner hated humanity, if I remember, wanted to wage war on them. Could it be possible that there would be rodents out there of the opposite extreme? Those who would hold NIMH in reverence for their gift of intelligence, and want to make contact with humans, under the impression that they would be welcomed as a new part of human society?

Enter the Reformers, a group of Rats and Mice who believe just that with a very cult-like ferver. These rodents would seek to make peaceful contact with humans, or at least plan to, and likely want to act as human-like as possible, which, would likely cause quite a stir within the rodents of NIMH's secluded world. Perhaps these rodents would even wish to try to share their vision, or even their 'gift of intelligence' with other, feral rats and mice. Who knows?

Anyways, that's all I have for now.. Please let me know what you think. :)

Sounds Intriging

Sounds interesting Tzolkin,it would be neat to see how that would work out. Imagine the possible RP that would come from such a subject. It might even fit into the Plane RP Cedric and I are discussing.

I also like the sound of this plot. It could also work with a very small RP plot I've been thinking about as well.

Cedric

An interesting idea, to say the least. But for the record, Jenner didn't originally plan to attack the humans. He only suggested it in light of the mention that humans might discover them and try to destroy the colony. But it sounds entirely realistic that there would be rodents on the other end of things. I may try to get in on it, if I can.

I like the idea, Tzolkin. It's got plenty of opportunity for rp, and some mischeif (which i'm always on the hunt for) and is extremely plausible. I like this, and can see Tod being very much involved in the storyline, even if /he/ isn't a willing party.

Fascinating

I think that this is a very good idea. I has a lot of creative potential, and it opens up new avenues of roleplay. Heck, this could even be our next GP background post-Ranger.

Definitely, it brings up a whole slate of issues - politically and socially. It is inevitable that, as the colony expands naturally in conjunction with the reach of human knowledge in the Information Age, the NIMH rodents' existence will eventually be discovered. How will the two races react to the other? Will Man be so blind as to reject his new companion, or shall he, in a rare wisdom, open his arm to accept his fellow thinker? What about communication? Can rats actually communicate in a way humans can understand, and how will this change how humans treat animals in general?

Of course, these questions are all long term, and it would be best to restrict ourselves to the short term, but even so, there are many questions. How would such contact be established, and, more importantly, would it be worth it? Even if the scientific ambitions of humans can be reined in, the NIMH rodents would still be subject to a lot of attention. What of their quest for tranquil existence?

Then, there is this emulation of the humans. Of course, the NIMH rodents already emulate the humans to some extent, but how much is too much? Simon's player had brought this up on the MUCK and IM, and its worth repeating: perhaps being 'too human' isn't necessarily good, that in the end, they are rodents, though 'civilized'. The big question is figuring out where the line falls, what is distinct to biology and to rationality, what Man and Rat share, and where they differ.

Now, 'passing on' the 'gift' with other ferals is certainly a very controversial topic. Sure, they may see the benefits of the NIMH state, but there are also burdens. Would it be right to offer something to their feral cousins that would eventually burden them? How can you say that one state is 'better' than another? Some more Machiavellian persons might see this as a threat to their established power... ;)

Whatever the case may be, I would really like to see this come about somehow. There are a lot of questions and mysteries that deserve exploration, and this idea can only be good, in the end, for enriching the MUCK environment.

Hm..

To Matthias: Well, the way I envisioned the human emulation thing would be more 'trying to be like humans' than succeeding. They are rodent's and in the end will always end up acting like rodents in some way or another...
