Connect

To connect to NIMHmuck, just point your favorite MU* client (or telnet client) to:

Server Name: muck.nimhmuck.org
Port: 4567
Or (if your system supports it) you can use this link to connect.

If you have Java installed on your browser, you can connect to NIMHmuck with this Java applet. If you use the applet, please be patient. It can take a while to load.

Then type 'connect guest guest' (without quotes) to log in as a guest. If you need any help, you can page a wizard or another player by using the page command: page [player]=[message]
The muck is usually the most active during the hours of 5 - 12 PM MST (GMT -7), but you can sometimes catch people on at other times as well.

To enjoy your mucking experience better, it is recommended that you use a MU* client instead of telnet, as MU* clients offer a few features that make mucking easier. Here are links to a few of the ones that the wizstaff recommends:

  • MuckClient - (Windows, Freeware) A simple client, great for people just starting out on mucks.
  • MUSHclient - (Windows, Freeware/Open Source) A very full-featured client; somewhat complex, especially for beginners. Provides some facility for extending its features, making it great for people who like to tinker.
  • SimpleMU - (Windows, Shareware) Also full-featured, yet easier to use. Provides a nice middle ground.
  • Cantrip - (MacOS X, Freeware) Features triggers and scripting.
  • Savitar - (MacOS 8/9/X, Shareware) Another popular client for the Macintosh.
  • JamochaMud - (Java, Freeware) If your computer can run Java (at least version 1.1) then you should be able to use this to connect.
  • For a list of other Muck clients, try onlineroleplay.com's mud client list or the MUD Client section of Google Directory

Connecting with MuckClient

Since it's impossible to list instructions for every client, we'll list instructions for one of the more common beginner's clients. Most of these instructions apply with a few modifications to other clients.

  1. Download and install MuckClient.
  2. Run MuckClient (by default you can get to it by clicking Start » Programs » Software Internationals » MuckClient, or by double-clicking the MuckClient icon on the desktop).
  3. Click the Connect button on the toolbar (it should be the only button that is clickable at this point).
  4. In the Host or IP Address box, type muck.nimhmuck.org and in the Port box, type 4567.
  5. Click the Connect button. You should see a screen that looks like this:
    #$#mcp version: "2.1" to: "2.1"

    ====================================================================
    = =
    = Welcome To: =
    = =
    = N I M H m u c k =
    = =
    = Version 5 =
    = =
    ====================================================================

    connect to login
ch to login hidden (Wizard only)
    request to request a character
    help to get help
WHO to see who is online
    QUIT to quit this screen

  6. In the text entry box at the bottom of the window, type connect guest guest and press return.
  7. Now you're on NIMHmuck itself. From there you can send a "page" or message to a wizard. To find out what wizzes are online, type wizzes. To send a message to a wiz or another player, use the page command: page [player]=[your message here]

There are also a number of other common commands that are available to you. Be sure to check out the Rules and Help sections for more information. When you are ready to get a character, please see the section about applying for one for help on how to do so. Happy Mucking!
