Welcome to NIMHmuck.org, the official home of NIMHmuck, a multiuser text-based role-playing game, based on the movie The Secret of NIMH. To connect, simply telnet to muck.nimhmuck.org port 4567. If you're new to mucks, check out the Connect page for some brief instructions on how to get started. Have fun!

Respect

There is a cardinal rule of the muck that I believe has been ignored far too much lately: "treat all other players and staff with respect." Perhaps because it's buried at the end of the rules page, or perhaps because there is a lack of understanding about what that means.

What does respect mean?

The dictionary gives a somewhat unclear definition, so I'm going to give my own.

  • Understanding that on the other end of the computer screen is another human being with feelings and faults, and not expecting perfection from them.
  • Recognizing that others have a right to their opinion.
  • Treating others in ways that won't make them feel uncomfortable, even if you don't like them or agree with them.

A bit of Catastrophe now and then is a healthy thing...

As many of you have no doubt seen, NIMHmuck has been rather quiet on the RP front of late. While there are various reasons for this, perhaps one of the biggest is IC complacency. In other words, the Rats have it too good. While they have some minor problem from time to time, they can too easily retreat inside the colony and isolate themselves from these problems. The problems inside the colony are likewise of little or no concern to the average colonist; it's politics as usual, but nothing that would seem to affect someone one way or another. Nicodemus may have had the right idea by trying to keep the rats in peaceful isolation, but they are nevertheless still falling into the trap of complacency. Unchanging, static, relatively boring, unless some more or less contrived drama is conceived.

We need a catastrophe.

Upgraded Drupal again, now with new theme goodness

I've upgraded everything to the latest version of drupal and put up a new theme that I hope you'll all like. I'll need to do some tweaks to get it customized for NIMHmuck, but my hope is that it fits better with the overall NIMHmuck style. If, for whatever reason, you'd rather use a different theme, just click the "My Account" link on the left-hand side when logged in, choose "Edit" and you can pick a different theme.

Please let me know if you see something that doesn't work.

Tzolkin's Guide to Easy RP

Hey all, Tzol here, offering you a few things I've learned while trying to get NIMHmuck back to its old RP-laden self. I thought the word probably needed to get out about what might be a very useful technique I've been experimenting with (Yes, I've been experimenting on you! Buahaha!), and Tim seemed to agree, so, here goes...

Do you read descriptions on the MUCK?

Sewer Rat Colony

I had an idea today; a bit of synchronicity occurred as I re-read one of my favourite novels: The Amazing Maurice and his Educated Rodents.

Upgraded Drupal

I've upgraded Drupal to the latest 5.x series, and am hoping to get it upgraded to the 6.x series soon. So, pardon the dust while we work. :)

Scheduled MUCK Downtime!

The muck (and website) will be going down sometime tomorrow (Saturday, Dec 13) in order for me to prepare to move out of my apartment for graduation. Jeff has volunteered to host the server again, but there may be some interruption in service while we get the database transferred over. Thanks for your patience.

What NIMHmuck scenario would most interest you?

The End of Rodentkind?

This is meant as a log, and reflection of various ideas related to a myriad of loose ends which due to slow RP, never got tied. It is not meant as a canonical path for the muck unless it is wished to be such. It is hoped that by brainstorming this publicly, we can overcome the barrier to RP on the muck and get things going as full speed as they were years ago.
